Emptying

The first three Laws of Emotional Power outline what emotions are: separate objects, located in the body that exist regardless of how practical, rational, and/or upbeat you are. The next four laws explain how they work.

The Fourth Law of Emotional Power is Emptying and it illuminates that emotions are meant to fill the body…and they are meant to empty.

Filling-up emotionally happens automatically. Life experiences fill our bodies with different emotions daily. Emptying, on the other hand, requires our time and attention.

Emptying is a natural impulse which we do every time we vent to friends, write in journals, and speak to therapists. And while emptying can be instinctive, it can also elude people and lead to negative behaviors such as addiction, chronic conflict, racing minds, and anxiety.

Considering how instinctive it is to empty emotions and how challenging life can be when we don’t, emptying is a truly valuable skill.

The first step to emptying is recognizing when we are emotionally full, and discomfort in our body is the signal (Law #3). Heeding the signal, here are three ways we can empty on our own:

  1. Journaling the body is one of the most efficient and effective emptying practices.
  2. One of the best ways to move emotions out of the body is through movement.
  3. Creativity is a powerful emptying practice.
